Buy colorful, off-the-shelf window treatments and shower curtains, or consider custom. "That way you can pick pretty fabric that goes with your color scheme and coordinate it to look nice with something on the wall," says LaDonna. "There are lots of options when you go the custom route." If you have one of those bathrooms with the rare empty wall, consider tacking a bright, batik bedspread to cover it, hanging straight down or in easy folds. "Use the top of the toilet for bright, fun items," says Cy. He, for example, placed a bright yellow vase on the toilet tank that picked up other colors in the bathroom and holds corn husk flowers he got on vacation. He also decoupaged fake vases on the wall behind the tank and says his Ugly Duckling bathroom is now his favorite room of the house.
The right size bathtub. What could be more frustrating than choosing a bathtub and realising it's the wrong size? Ensure that the exact dimensions of the space for the tub have been recorded to prevent a problem occurring during fitting. A corner tub makes a quirky addition to any bathroom, but make sure to consider whether the space will work well with such an accessory, or whether this is an unnecessary novelty. Alternatively, a freestanding bath creates a very elegant and luxury feel. Free standing tubs come in a wide range of materials and finishes including wood, copper and enamel. The best material for bathtubs. Choosing the best surface material for a bathtub can be a prolonged process, yet an important one. When spending larger amounts of money, the bathtub should be built to last, therefore, ensure the material is the right one for the job.
Typically when we start a bathroom renovation we have one tile that we dream of including in our design. Sometimes it is a really special or unique accent tile and sometimes it is as simple as knowing that you want white subway tile. Either way, take that dream tile and use it as the starting point for the other tile you will choose for your bathroom design. Taking your first (must have) choice as a starting point, use it to make the decisions for the other tiles you will include in your design. If your must have is a really unique color or pattern and is going to be the focal point of your design, pull more subtle colors from it to use in your accent tiles. If however your first choice is really plain (like a white subway tile) you may want to add an element of interest with a colorful accent tile or even a smaller scale white penny tile to change it up and add interest.
